Normie Fires Intern Over Offensive Video Amid Memecoin Project Challenges

The video, captioned “Something is cooking in the Normie Labs,” was deemed offensive by many viewers.

Normie, a memecoin project on Coinbase’s native blockchain Base, has announced the firing of an intern following the posting of an offensive video on its official X account.

“After careful consideration and internal reflection, we have decided to remove our last video,” Normie developers wrote. “The intern that posted it has been fired. We sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by the content. We are committed to ensuring that this does not happen again.”

The promotional video, released on June 10, featured a blue-skinned cartoon chef dancing with exaggerated features, which many in the crypto community found distasteful.

“How is this the intern’s fault? Did he make and post the whole video himself? Did your team not approve it?” one user commented. “Fire whoever should’ve been helping the intern and allowed that to happen.”

Normie developers explained that the intended message of the video was about resilience and personal transformation, stating, “There is always a way out, even when everything is coming at you, and positive change begins with oneself.” They added, “It was never our intention to trivialize a sensitive topic.”

Previous Incidents

Last month, Normie faced a significant security breach when hackers exploited a smart contract, stealing 225 Ether (approximately $881,686) from users. This incident caused the token’s market cap to plummet by $41.7 million in less than three hours.

Normie later accepted the hacker’s offer to return 90% of the stolen NORMIE tokens, on the condition that Normie uses the recovered funds and the $2.3 million in its development wallet to launch a new token to reimburse NORMIE holders. The token‘s price had already fallen 96% since the exploit.

On June 7, Normie developers claimed that they had recovered 192 Ether from the incident and completed the token launch at its new address.

Since April 1, 372,642 new tokens have been launched on the Ethereum network, with 88% of them launched on Coinbase’s layer-2 blockchain, Base.

Summary Review: Normie’s recent challenges highlight the importance of careful content management and robust security measures in the rapidly evolving crypto space. The firing of the intern and the steps taken to recover from the smart contract exploit show Normie’s commitment to rectifying issues and regaining the trust of their community.
