Ronin, a blockchain for gaming, is set to launch Ronin zkEVM, a zero-knowledge (ZK) Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) layer-2 chain using a modified Polygon Chain Development Kit (CDK) by Sky Mavis.
Recently announced, Ronin zkEVM aims to support more users and foster growth for game studio partners. This upgrade promises to enhance the platform’s openness, making it easier to integrate diverse gaming experiences.
The new chain will also feature an integrated Polygon ZK prover, enabling game studios to create their own zkEVM blockchains without needing to establish separate security and consensus protocols.
Preparing for High Transaction Volumes
Originally designed for Axie Infinity, a popular play-to-earn (P2E) game, Ronin has expanded to support a wider range of gaming applications. Data from the Ronin blockchain explorer shows a current daily active user count of 1.4 million.
Jeff Zirlin, co-founder of Sky Mavis, emphasized Ronin’s readiness to handle substantial transaction volumes, stating:
“With 1.5 million daily active users, Ronin is now the largest gaming blockchain globally. While currently managing up to 40 million transactions daily, our goal is to scale to handle 400 million or even four billion transactions, with zkEVM playing a crucial role in achieving this.”
Empowering Game Studios and Players
The introduction of Ronin zkEVM is expected to empower partner studios to innovate and grow further. Notable blockchain games have already integrated into Ronin, benefiting from its expansive player base. For instance, since migrating to Ronin in October 2023, the Web3 game Pixels has attracted over 4.4 million users.
Zirlin highlighted additional advantages of zkEVM, such as seamless cross-chain capabilities and potentially increased staking rewards, fostering a robust ecosystem for gaming development.
“This marks a significant step in our journey towards permissionless innovation, enabling third-party developers to launch their own layer-2 blockchains on Ronin, creating new avenues for games and players alike,” Zirlin added.
Summary Review: Ronin’s introduction of zkEVM represents a pivotal advancement in the realm of blockchain gaming. By enhancing scalability and interoperability through its zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine, Ronin is poised to support a broader array of gaming experiences while accommodating a growing user base. This initiative not only underscores Ronin’s commitment to innovation but also opens doors for game studios to explore new creative possibilities within the Web3 ecosystem. As the platform prepares to handle significantly higher transaction volumes, the future looks promising for Ronin and its efforts to drive the next phase of decentralized gaming development.
