Authy 2FA App Leaked Phone Numbers, Potentially Leading to Text Phishing

Twilio, the developer of the Authy authenticator app, announced that hackers accessed the Authy Android app database and exposed user phone numbers. However, the accounts themselves were not compromised.

According to a July 1 security alert from Twilio, attackers were able to identify data associated with accounts, including phone numbers. While the attackers did not gain access to authentication credentials, the exposed phone numbers could be used for phishing and smishing attacks in the future.

Twilio emphasized that Authy users should “stay diligent and have heightened awareness around the texts they are receiving” to protect themselves from potential scams.
