Nvidia is partnering with Qatari telecom provider Ooredoo to introduce advanced AI technology to the Middle East, a significant move amidst tightening US export regulations.
According to a June 24 Reuters report, Nvidia will deploy its AI technology in data centers owned by Ooredoo across multiple countries in the region. Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo, CEO of Ooredoo, announced that this collaboration will make Ooredoo the first in the area to offer direct access to Nvidia’s AI and graphics technology.
Bringing Cutting-Edge AI to the Middle East
Ooredoo serves clients in Qatar, Algeria, Tunisia, Oman, Kuwait, and the Maldives. Fakhroo highlighted that this agreement gives these clients access to advanced technology that their competitors might not have for another 18 to 24 months.
While the exact type of Nvidia technology to be installed has not been disclosed, the installation will be based on customer demand and technology availability. Financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed as well.
Ooredoo plans to invest over $1 billion to increase its data center capacity by 20-25 additional megawatts, supplementing the current 40 megawatts. By the end of the decade, Fakhroo aims to triple this capacity. Ronnie Vasishta, Nvidia’s senior vice president of telecom, stated that this technology will enhance Ooredoo’s ability to support clients in deploying generative AI applications.
Summary Review: Nvidia’s partnership with Ooredoo marks a strategic expansion into the Middle East, offering advanced AI capabilities to a region with growing technological demand. This move underscores the increasing importance of AI technology globally and highlights Nvidia’s adaptability amidst evolving export regulations.
