Roger Ver Granted Bail in Spain, Faces Extradition to the US

Roger Ver, an early investor in cryptocurrencies and widely known as “Bitcoin Jesus,” has been granted bail in Spain but still faces potential extradition to the United States over tax fraud charges.

A Spanish court allowed Ver to leave jail after he posted approximately $163,000 in bail on May 17, as reported by Bloomberg on June 5. However, the conditions of his release require him to stay in Spain, surrender his passport, and appear in court every two days.

The charges against Ver, announced by the U.S. Justice Department on April 30, include mail fraud, tax evasion, and filing false tax returns. Allegations suggest that he withheld approximately $48 million in capital gains from the Internal Revenue Service by not reporting profits from his Bitcoin and other asset sales.

Despite being born in California, Ver renounced his U.S. citizenship in 2014 and holds citizenship in Saint Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda. U.S. authorities intend to extradite him from Spain to face trial in the United States.
