Worldcoin, the digital identity and cryptocurrency initiative co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, is gearing up for its mainnet launch with a developer preview of the World Chain.
On July 9, the Worldcoin Foundation announced the debut of the World Chain developer preview, offering global developers the chance to start building on the platform before its official launch.
The World Chain developer preview allows developers to deploy infrastructure on a “gated mainnet,” bypassing the traditional testnet phase. Remco Bloemen, head of protocol at the Worldcoin Foundation, emphasized that developers have already been testing the World Chain on the OP Stack, an open-source framework supported by the Optimism Collective.
“OP Stack has undergone extensive testing—we have confidence in its functionality,” Bloemen stated. Interested developers can apply for access to the developer preview through Worldcoin’s official website.
Initially supporting Optimism and the Superchain, World Chain has quickly become a significant application on the OP mainnet, with user transactions accounting for approximately 50% of the network’s activity within a year.
Scheduled for a full launch in 2024, World Chain integrates with Worldcoin’s identity protocol, World ID, aimed at facilitating real human transactions. The project aims to establish an ecosystem where the universal World ID acts as a global digital passport, fostering a global economy accessible to people worldwide, irrespective of national or economic boundaries.
Worldcoin, launched in July 2023 after three years of development, focuses on differentiating humans from AI through iris scanning technology. This process enables individuals to obtain a World ID, validating their identity online as genuine human beings.
“When World Chain’s mainnet goes live, over 10 million individuals in 160 countries will be able to explore and utilize on-chain applications via compatible wallets, starting with Tools for Humanity’s World App,” Bloemen confirmed.
The upcoming World Chain mainnet promises scalable, cost-effective transactions, along with enhanced compatibility and interoperability, aiming to revolutionize digital identity and blockchain technology applications globally.
Summary Review: Worldcoin is making significant strides toward its 2024 mainnet launch with the introduction of the World Chain developer preview. This preview allows developers to start building on a “gated mainnet” and integrate with the OP Stack, bypassing the need for a traditional testnet. The World Chain aims to enhance digital identity and enable real human transactions through its World ID protocol. With plans to support over 10 million users across 160 countries, Worldcoin is set to transform how digital identity and blockchain applications are utilized on a global scale.
